GeForce GTX 750 vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 750 features a GPU clock speed of 1020 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1250 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 512 Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which features a core clock speed of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1250 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 1408 SPUs, 88 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts
Difference: 145 Watts (264%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6950 2GB should in theory be much better than the GeForce GTX 750 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 750 80000 MB/sec
Difference: 80000 (100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB is a lot (more or less 116%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 750. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 750 32640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 37760 (116%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB should be quite a bit (about 57%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 750, and able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 750 16320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9280 (57%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
