GeForce GT 450 (OEM) vs Radeon HD 7870 XT

Intro

The GeForce GT 450 (OEM) features a clock frequency of 790 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 144 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7870 XT, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 925 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1500 MHz on this particular model. It features 1536 SPUs as well as 96 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 7870 XT 185 Watts
Difference: 79 Watts (75%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7870 XT should theoretically perform much faster than the GeForce GT 450 (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 XT 192000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 96000 (100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7870 XT will be much (more or less 368%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GT 450 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 XT 88800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 69840 (368%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7870 XT is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 XT 29600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10640 (56%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
