Geforce GTX 760 vs Radeon HD 4830 512MB

Intro

The Geforce GTX 760 comes with a GPU core speed of 980 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1502 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1152 SPUs, 96 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 4830 512MB, which comes with core speeds of 575 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Radeon HD 4830 512MB 95 Watts
Geforce GTX 760 170 Watts
Difference: 75 Watts (79%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Geforce GTX 760 is 234% faster than the Radeon HD 4830 512MB in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 192256 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4830 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 134656 (234%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 should be quite a bit (approximately 411%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4830 512MB. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 94080 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4830 512MB 18400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 75680 (411%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 760 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 31360 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4830 512MB 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22160 (241%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
