GeForce GTX 460 SE vs GeForce GTX 650

Intro

The GeForce GTX 460 SE features a GPU core speed of 650 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 850 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 288 Stream Processors, 48 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 650, which comes with clock speeds of 1058 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 650 64 Watts
GeForce GTX 460 SE 150 Watts
Difference: 86 Watts (134%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 460 SE should in theory be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 650 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 SE 108800 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 650 80000 MB/sec
Difference: 28800 (36%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 650 should be a little bit (approximately 9%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 460 SE. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 33856 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 460 SE 31200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2656 (9%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 SE should be quite a bit (approximately 23%) better at AA than the GeForce GTX 650, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 SE 20800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 650 16928 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3872 (23%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
