GeForce GT 440 3GB vs GeForce GTX 660

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB features core clock speeds of 594 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 144 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 660, which comes with a clock frequency of 980 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1502 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 960 SPUs, 80 TAUs, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Difference: 84 Watts (150%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 660 should in theory be a lot better than the GeForce GT 440 3GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 660 144192 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 100992 (234%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 660 should be a lot (more or less 450%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 660 78400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 64144 (450%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 660 should be much (approximately 65%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 440 3GB, and able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 660 23520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9264 (65%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
