GeForce GT 210 vs Geforce GTX 680

Intro

The GeForce GT 210 has core clock speeds of 589 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 16 SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Geforce GTX 680, which makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1006 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1502 MHz on this model. It features 1536 SPUs as well as 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 210 31 Watts
Geforce GTX 680 195 Watts
Difference: 164 Watts (529%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Geforce GTX 680 should in theory perform a lot faster than the GeForce GT 210 overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 192256 MB/sec
GeForce GT 210 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 179456 (1402%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 680 should be quite a bit (more or less 2633%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GT 210. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 128768 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 210 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 124056 (2633%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 680 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Geforce GTX 680 32192 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 210 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 29836 (1266%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
