GeForce GT 450 (OEM) vs Radeon HD 7770

Intro

The GeForce GT 450 (OEM) features core clock speeds of 790 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1536 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 144 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 7770, which comes with clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 106 Watts
Difference: 26 Watts (33%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GT 450 (OEM) should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7770 overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 96000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 24000 (33%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7770 will be a lot (about 111%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 450 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 21040 (111%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GT 450 (OEM) is a better choice, not by a very large margin though. (explain)

GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2960 (19%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
