Radeon HD 4830 1GB vs Radeon HD 7950 3GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 4830 1GB has a core clock speed of 575 MHz and a GDDR4 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It features 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 7950 3GB, which comes with GPU core speed of 800 MHz, and 3072 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1250 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 1792 Stream Processors, 112 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 7950 3GB should theoretically be a lot better than the Radeon HD 4830 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 3GB 240000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4830 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 182400 (317%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7950 3GB will be a lot (about 387%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4830 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 3GB 89600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4830 1GB 18400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 71200 (387%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7950 3GB is superior to the Radeon HD 4830 1GB, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 3GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4830 1GB 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 16400 (178%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
