GeForce GTX 560 vs Radeon HD 6770 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 560 comes with a core clock speed of 810 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1001 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 336 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6770 1GB, which has clock speeds of 900 MHz on the GPU, and 1050 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 800 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 108 Watts
GeForce GTX 560 150 Watts
Difference: 42 Watts (39%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 560 should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6770 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 128128 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 67200 MB/sec
Difference: 60928 (91%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 should be a lot (more or less 26%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 6770 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 45360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 36000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9360 (26%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 560 is superior to the Radeon HD 6770 1GB, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 25920 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 14400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11520 (80%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
