GeForce 8800 GS vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS makes use of a 65 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 550 MHz. The GDDR3 memory runs at a frequency of 800 MHz on this particular model. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 TAUs and 12 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB, which comes with a clock speed of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 480 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 63 Watts
GeForce 8800 GS 105 Watts
Difference: 42 Watts (67%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB should in theory be a lot faster than the GeForce 8800 GS overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 25600 (67%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GS should be much (about 38%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GS 26400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7200 (38%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GS is the winner, but only just. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GS 6600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 200 (3%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
