GeForce 8800 GS vs Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS comes with core clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 384 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 TAUs and 12 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, which comes with GPU core speed of 650 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 480 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 50 Watts
GeForce 8800 GS 105 Watts
Difference: 55 Watts (110%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB should in theory be much better than the GeForce 8800 GS overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 25600 (67%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GS is much (approximately 69%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GS 26400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10800 (69%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GS should be quite a bit (about 27%) better at AA than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, and should be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GS 6600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1400 (27%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
