Radeon HD 4550 512MB vs Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 4550 512MB uses a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 600 MHz. The GDDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 800 MHz on this specific model. It features 80(16x5) SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB, which has core clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 480 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 4550 512MB 25 Watts
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB 50 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (100%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 4550 512MB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB 28800 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4550 512MB 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 16000 (125%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB should be much (more or less 225%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4550 512MB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB 15600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 512MB 4800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10800 (225%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB will be quite a bit (approximately 117%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon HD 4550 512MB, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB 5200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 512MB 2400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2800 (117%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
