Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 650 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM runs at a speed of 900 MHz on this particular card. It features 480 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which features core clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1408 SPUs as well as 88 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts
Difference: 150 Watts (300%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon HD 6950 2GB should theoretically be a lot superior to the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 131200 (456%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB is quite a bit (approximately 351%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 54800 (351%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 2GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 1GB 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20400 (392%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
