GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 has core clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 850 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 96 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 750 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 900 MHz on this model. It features 160 SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 31 Watts
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 70 Watts
Difference: 39 Watts (126%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 should in theory be much faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 54400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 25600 (89%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 will be much (about 193%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 17600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 6000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11600 (193%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 will be a lot (approximately 47%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 4400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 3000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1400 (47%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
