GeForce GTX 465 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 607 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 802 MHz on this particular card. It features 352 SPUs as well as 44 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 625 MHz. The GDDR3 memory runs at a speed of 800 MHz on this model. It features 160 SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
GeForce GTX 465 200 Watts
Difference: 169 Watts (545%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 465 should be much faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 89792 (702%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 465 will be quite a bit (more or less 434%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 21708 (434%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 465 is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 16924 (677%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
