GeForce RTX 3080 Ti vs GeForce RTX 4090

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti comes with a clock speed of 1365 MHz and a GDDR6X memory speed of 1188 MHz. It also features a 384-bit bus, and makes use of a 8 nm design. It is made up of 10240 SPUs, 320 TAUs, and 112 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce RTX 4090, which has clock speeds of 2235 MHz on the GPU, and 1325 MHz on the 24576 MB of GDDR6X RAM. It features 16384 SPUs as well as 512 Texture Address Units and 176 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce RTX 4090 450 Watts
Difference: 100 Watts (29%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 4090 is 12% faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 1042432 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 934297 MB/sec
Difference: 108135 (12%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4090 is a lot (about 162%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 1144320 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 436800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 707520 (162%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 4090 is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 393360 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 152880 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 240480 (157%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
