Radeon RX 6800 vs Radeon RX 6950 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6800 features core speeds of 1700 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 3840 SPUs along with 240 TAUs and 96 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6950 XT, which features GPU core speed of 1925 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM running at 2250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 5120 Stream Processors, 320 TAUs, and 128 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6800 250 Watts
Radeon RX 6950 XT 335 Watts
Difference: 85 Watts (34%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 6950 XT should be a little bit faster than the Radeon RX 6800 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 589824 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6800 524288 MB/sec
Difference: 65536 (13%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6950 XT will be quite a bit (about 51%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon RX 6800. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 616000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 208000 (51%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6950 XT is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 246400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 83200 (51%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
