Radeon R9 390X 8G vs Radeon RX 6750 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 390X 8G has a core clock frequency of 1050 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1500 MHz. It also uses a 512-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 2816 SPUs, 176 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6750 XT, which features core speeds of 2150 MHz on the GPU, and 2250 MHz on the 12288 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6750 XT 250 Watts
Radeon R9 390X 8G 275 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (10%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 6750 XT should in theory be a bit better than the Radeon R9 390X 8G in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6750 XT 442368 MB/sec
Radeon R9 390X 8G 384000 MB/sec
Difference: 58368 (15%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6750 XT should be a lot (approximately 86%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 390X 8G. (explain)

Radeon RX 6750 XT 344000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 390X 8G 184800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 159200 (86%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6750 XT is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6750 XT 137600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 390X 8G 67200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 70400 (105%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
