Geforce GTX 780 vs Radeon RX 6650 XT

Intro

The Geforce GTX 780 makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 863 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1502 MHz on this model. It features 2304 SPUs along with 192 Texture Address Units and 48 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6650 XT, which features core speeds of 2055 MHz on the GPU, and 2190 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6650 XT 176 Watts
Geforce GTX 780 250 Watts
Difference: 74 Watts (42%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Geforce GTX 780, in theory, should perform a little bit faster than the Radeon RX 6650 XT in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 288384 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6650 XT 287072 MB/sec
Difference: 1312 (0%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6650 XT will be a lot (more or less 59%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Geforce GTX 780. (explain)

Radeon RX 6650 XT 263040 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 780 165696 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 97344 (59%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6650 XT is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6650 XT 131520 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 780 41424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 90096 (217%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
