GeForce GTX 465 vs Radeon HD 6950

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 has a GPU core clock speed of 607 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 802 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 352 Stream Processors, 44 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6950, which has core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1408 SPUs as well as 88 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6950 will be 56% faster than the GeForce GTX 465 in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
Difference: 57408 (56%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 should be quite a bit (about 164%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 70400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 43692 (164%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6176 (32%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
