Radeon HD 7850 vs Radeon RX 7900 XTX

Intro

The Radeon HD 7850 has core clock speeds of 860 MHz on the GPU, and 1200 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which features GPU clock speed of 1855 MHz, and 24576 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 2500 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is comprised of 6144 Stream Processors, 384 TAUs, and 192 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon HD 7850 130 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XTX 355 Watts
Difference: 225 Watts (173%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX, in theory, should be much faster than the Radeon HD 7850 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 983040 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7850 153600 MB/sec
Difference: 829440 (540%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX should be much (about 1194%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 7850. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 712320 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7850 55040 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 657280 (1194%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 356160 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7850 27520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 328640 (1194%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
