Geforce GTX 680 vs Radeon RX 7900 XTX

Intro

The Geforce GTX 680 has a core clock frequency of 1006 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1502 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 1536 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which comes with core speeds of 1855 MHz on the GPU, and 2500 MHz on the 24576 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 6144 SPUs along with 384 TAUs and 192 ROPs.

Geforce GTX 680 195 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XTX 355 Watts
Difference: 160 Watts (82%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX should be much faster than the Geforce GTX 680 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 983040 MB/sec
Geforce GTX 680 192256 MB/sec
Difference: 790784 (411%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX should be a lot (more or less 453%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Geforce GTX 680. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 712320 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 680 128768 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 583552 (453%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX should be quite a bit (more or less 1006%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Geforce GTX 680, and also capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 356160 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 680 32192 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 323968 (1006%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
