Radeon RX 470 4GB vs Radeon RX 7900 XTX

Intro

The Radeon RX 470 4GB features a core clock frequency of 926 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1650 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 14 nm design. It features 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which has GPU core speed of 1855 MHz, and 24576 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2500 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is comprised of 6144 SPUs, 384 TAUs, and 192 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 355 Watts
Difference: 235 Watts (196%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX should perform much faster than the Radeon RX 470 4GB in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 983040 MB/sec
Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
Difference: 771840 (365%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is much (more or less 501%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 470 4GB. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 712320 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 593792 (501%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 356160 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 326528 (1102%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
