Geforce GTX 680 vs Radeon RX 7900 XT

Intro

The Geforce GTX 680 has core clock speeds of 1006 MHz on the GPU, and 1502 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1536 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which has clock speeds of 1500 MHz on the GPU, and 2500 MHz on the 20480 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 5376 SPUs along with 336 TAUs and 192 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Geforce GTX 680 195 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 105 Watts (54%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 7900 XT should be quite a bit faster than the Geforce GTX 680 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
Geforce GTX 680 192256 MB/sec
Difference: 626944 (326%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT is a lot (approximately 291%) more effective at texture filtering than the Geforce GTX 680. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 680 128768 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 375232 (291%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XT is superior to the Geforce GTX 680, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 680 32192 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 255808 (795%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
