GeForce RTX 2070 Super vs GeForce RTX 4090

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2070 Super features a GPU core speed of 1605 MHz, and the 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory is set to run at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 2560 Stream Processors, 160 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce RTX 4090, which has GPU clock speed of 2235 MHz, and 24576 MB of GDDR6X RAM running at 1325 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is comprised of 16384 Stream Processors, 512 Texture Address Units, and 176 ROPs.

GeForce RTX 2070 Super 215 Watts
GeForce RTX 4090 450 Watts
Difference: 235 Watts (109%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 4090 should in theory perform much faster than the GeForce RTX 2070 Super overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 1042432 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 2070 Super 458752 MB/sec
Difference: 583680 (127%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4090 is quite a bit (approximately 346%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce RTX 2070 Super. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 1144320 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 2070 Super 256800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 887520 (346%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 4090 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 393360 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 2070 Super 102720 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 290640 (283%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
