Radeon RX 470 vs Radeon RX 6950 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 470 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 926 MHz, and the 8192 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1650 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 2048 Stream Processors, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6950 XT, which has GPU core speed of 1925 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 5120 SPUs, 320 TAUs, and 128 ROPs.

Radeon RX 470 120 Watts
Radeon RX 6950 XT 335 Watts
Difference: 215 Watts (179%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 6950 XT should be much faster than the Radeon RX 470 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 589824 MB/sec
Radeon RX 470 211200 MB/sec
Difference: 378624 (179%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6950 XT will be quite a bit (approximately 420%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 470. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 616000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 470 118528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 497472 (420%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6950 XT is quite a bit (more or less 732%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon RX 470, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 246400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 470 29632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 216768 (732%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
