GeForce GTX 965M vs GeForce RTX 3050

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M comes with clock speeds of 944 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce RTX 3050, which has clock speeds of 1552 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 80 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
GeForce RTX 3050 130 Watts
Difference: 70 Watts (117%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 3050, in theory, should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 965M in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3050 229376 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 165376 (258%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3050 should be a lot (about 106%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 965M. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3050 124160 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 63744 (106%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3050 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3050 49664 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 19456 (64%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
