GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB vs Geforce GTX 760

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB comes with a GPU core speed of 1260 MHz, and the 12288 MB of GDDR6X RAM runs at 1188 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is comprised of 8960 SPUs, 280 TAUs, and 112 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Geforce GTX 760, which features a core clock speed of 980 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1502 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1152 SPUs, 96 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 350 Watts
Difference: 180 Watts (106%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB should be much faster than the Geforce GTX 760 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 934298 MB/sec
Geforce GTX 760 192256 MB/sec
Difference: 742042 (386%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB will be quite a bit (approximately 275%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Geforce GTX 760. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 352800 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 760 94080 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 258720 (275%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 141120 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 760 31360 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 109760 (350%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
