GeForce 920M vs GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB

Intro

The GeForce 920M features a clock frequency of 954 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 384 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB, which has a core clock frequency of 1260 MHz and a GDDR6X memory frequency of 1188 MHz. It also makes use of a 384-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 8 nm design. It is made up of 8960 SPUs, 280 Texture Address Units, and 112 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB should be 6388% quicker than the GeForce 920M in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 934298 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 919898 (6388%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB should be quite a bit (more or less 1056%) better at AF than the GeForce 920M. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 352800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 322272 (1056%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 141120 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 133488 (1749%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
