GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB vs Radeon RX 570

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB comes with clock speeds of 1260 MHz on the GPU, and 1188 MHz on the 12288 MB of GDDR6X memory. It features 8960 SPUs as well as 280 Texture Address Units and 112 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 570, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1168 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 2048 Stream Processors, 128 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 350 Watts
Difference: 200 Watts (133%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB should in theory be quite a bit superior to the Radeon RX 570 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 934298 MB/sec
Radeon RX 570 229376 MB/sec
Difference: 704922 (307%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is quite a bit (more or less 136%) better at AF than the Radeon RX 570. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 352800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 570 149504 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 203296 (136%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 141120 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 570 37376 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 103744 (278%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
