Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce RTX 3070 220 Watts
GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 350 Watts
Difference: 130 Watts (59%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB, in theory, should be a little bit faster than the GeForce RTX 3070 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 934298 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 3070 (Unknown) MB/sec
Difference: 934298 (-100%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is quite a bit (approximately 28%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce RTX 3070. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 352800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3070 276000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 76800 (28%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3070 is just a bit (about 2%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB, and should be able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 144000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 141120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2880 (2%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
