Radeon R7 250 vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The Radeon R7 250 features clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1150 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which features core clock speeds of 2200 MHz on the GPU, and 2250 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R7 250 65 Watts
Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
Difference: 42 Watts (65%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 6500 XT should be 100% faster than the Radeon R7 250 in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
Radeon R7 250 73600 MB/sec
Difference: 73856 (100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT should be a lot (about 487%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 250. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 250 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 116800 (487%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6500 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 250 8000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 62400 (780%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
