GeForce GTX 980 Ti vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 980 Ti comes with clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 6144 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2816 SPUs along with 176 TAUs and 96 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which has a GPU core clock speed of 2200 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 2250 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
GeForce GTX 980 Ti 250 Watts
Difference: 143 Watts (134%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 980 Ti is 128% quicker than the Radeon RX 6500 XT in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 Ti 336000 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
Difference: 188544 (128%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 980 Ti should be quite a bit (about 25%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 6500 XT. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 Ti 176000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 35200 (25%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 980 Ti is superior to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 Ti 96000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25600 (36%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
