GeForce GTX 1050 vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1050 has core clock speeds of 1354 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which features a core clock speed of 2200 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2250 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 6 nm design. It features 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 1050 75 Watts
Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
Difference: 32 Watts (43%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6500 XT should in theory be a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 1050 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 1050 114688 MB/sec
Difference: 32768 (29%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT will be a lot (more or less 160%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 1050. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 1050 54160 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 86640 (160%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT will be quite a bit (more or less 62%) more effective at AA than the GeForce GTX 1050, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 1050 43328 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 27072 (62%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
