Radeon RX 5500 vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 5500 comes with clock speeds of 1670 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 1408 SPUs along with 88 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which has GPU clock speed of 2200 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 2250 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 1024 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
Radeon RX 5500 150 Watts
Difference: 43 Watts (40%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 5500 will be 56% faster than the Radeon RX 6500 XT in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 229376 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
Difference: 81920 (56%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 is just a bit (approximately 4%) better at AF than the Radeon RX 6500 XT. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 146960 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6160 (4%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6500 XT is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 5500 53440 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 16960 (32%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
