Radeon R9 M390X vs Radeon RX 6600 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 M390X features core speeds of 723 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6600 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1968 MHz. The GDDR6 memory is set to run at a speed of 2000 MHz on this specific card. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Radeon RX 6600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 35 Watts (28%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6600 XT should in theory be much faster than the Radeon R9 M390X overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 262144 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M390X 160000 MB/sec
Difference: 102144 (64%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT should be quite a bit (about 172%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M390X. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 251904 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M390X 92544 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 159360 (172%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6600 XT is superior to the Radeon R9 M390X, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 125952 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M390X 23136 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 102816 (444%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
