GeForce RTX 3070 Ti vs Radeon RX 5700

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti makes use of a 8 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1575 MHz. The GDDR6X RAM runs at a speed of 1188 MHz on this specific card. It features 6144 SPUs as well as 192 Texture Address Units and 96 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 5700, which features core speeds of 1465 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8096 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 144 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 5700 180 Watts
GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 290 Watts
Difference: 110 Watts (61%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti should in theory perform much faster than the Radeon RX 5700 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 622899 MB/sec
Radeon RX 5700 458752 MB/sec
Difference: 164147 (36%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti will be quite a bit (more or less 43%) more effective at AF than the Radeon RX 5700. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 302400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 5700 210960 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 91440 (43%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti should be a lot (approximately 61%) better at AA than the Radeon RX 5700, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 151200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 5700 93760 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 57440 (61%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
