GeForce RTX 3070 Ti vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti comes with core speeds of 1575 MHz on the GPU, and 1188 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6X RAM. It features 6144 SPUs along with 192 Texture Address Units and 96 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which features a clock frequency of 1605 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 7 nm design. It features 2560 SPUs, 160 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 225 Watts
GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 290 Watts
Difference: 65 Watts (29%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti should be 36% faster than the Radeon RX 5700 XT in general, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 622899 MB/sec
Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
Difference: 164147 (36%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is just a bit (approximately 18%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 5700 XT. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 302400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 45600 (18%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 151200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 48480 (47%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
