GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 vs GeForce RTX 3060 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 550 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 850 MHz on this particular model. It features 96 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, which features GPU core speed of 1410 MHz, and 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM running at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 4864 Stream Processors, 152 TAUs, and 80 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 70 Watts
GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 200 Watts
Difference: 130 Watts (186%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 is -100% quicker than the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti overall, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 54400 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (Unknown) MB/sec
Difference: 54400 (-100%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3060 Ti should be a lot (about 1118%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 214320 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 196720 (1118%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 112800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 108400 (2464%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
