Radeon HD 7850 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 7850 has a GPU core clock speed of 860 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1200 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1024 Stream Processors, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which features core speeds of 1825 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 4608 SPUs along with 288 Texture Address Units and 128 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 7850 130 Watts
Radeon RX 6800 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 170 Watts (131%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 6800 XT should theoretically be a lot superior to the Radeon HD 7850 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7850 153600 MB/sec
Difference: 370688 (241%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT is much (about 855%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 7850. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7850 55040 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 470560 (855%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT will be quite a bit (approximately 749%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 7850, and should be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7850 27520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 206080 (749%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
