GeForce GTX 650 vs Radeon RX 6800

Intro

The GeForce GTX 650 has clock speeds of 1058 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6800, which has GPU clock speed of 1700 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 3840 Stream Processors, 240 TAUs, and 96 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 650 64 Watts
Radeon RX 6800 250 Watts
Difference: 186 Watts (291%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 6800 should be a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 650 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 524288 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 650 80000 MB/sec
Difference: 444288 (555%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 should be much (approximately 1105%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 650. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 650 33856 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 374144 (1105%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6800 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 650 16928 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 146272 (864%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
