GeForce GTX Titan vs Radeon RX 6800

Intro

The GeForce GTX Titan features core speeds of 837 MHz on the GPU, and 1502 MHz on the 6144 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 2688 SPUs as well as 224 Texture Address Units and 48 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6800, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1700 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 3840 Stream Processors, 240 Texture Address Units, and 96 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 6800 should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce GTX Titan in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 524288 MB/sec
GeForce GTX Titan 288384 MB/sec
Difference: 235904 (82%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 will be much (more or less 118%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX Titan. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX Titan 187488 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 220512 (118%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 should be quite a bit (more or less 306%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX Titan, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX Titan 40176 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 123024 (306%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
