Geforce GTX 780 vs Radeon RX 6800

Intro

The Geforce GTX 780 uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 863 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 1502 MHz on this specific card. It features 2304 SPUs along with 192 Texture Address Units and 48 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6800, which comes with GPU core speed of 1700 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM set to run at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 3840 SPUs, 240 Texture Address Units, and 96 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 6800 should perform much faster than the Geforce GTX 780 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 524288 MB/sec
Geforce GTX 780 288384 MB/sec
Difference: 235904 (82%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 is a lot (approximately 146%) more effective at texture filtering than the Geforce GTX 780. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 780 165696 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 242304 (146%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6800 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 780 41424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 121776 (294%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
