Radeon R9 380X vs Radeon RX 6800

Intro

The Radeon R9 380X comes with clock speeds of 970 MHz on the GPU, and 1425 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 6800, which comes with core speeds of 1700 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 3840 SPUs along with 240 TAUs and 96 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R9 380X 190 Watts
Radeon RX 6800 250 Watts
Difference: 60 Watts (32%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 6800 should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the Radeon R9 380X in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 524288 MB/sec
Radeon R9 380X 182400 MB/sec
Difference: 341888 (187%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 will be quite a bit (approximately 229%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 380X. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 380X 124160 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 283840 (229%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6800 is superior to the Radeon R9 380X, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 380X 31040 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 132160 (426%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
