GeForce GT 230 vs GeForce RTX 3080

Intro

The GeForce GT 230 has a GPU core speed of 550 MHz, and the 1536 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 800 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 32 Stream Processors, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce RTX 3080, which makes use of a 8 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 1440 MHz. The GDDR6X memory is set to run at a frequency of 1188 MHz on this particular card. It features 8704 SPUs as well as 272 TAUs and 96 ROPs.

GeForce RTX 3080 320 Watts
Difference: 255 Watts (392%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce RTX 3080 should theoretically be much superior to the GeForce GT 230 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 778547 MB/sec
GeForce GT 230 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 740147 (1927%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 will be much (approximately 4351%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 230. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 391680 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 230 8800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 382880 (4351%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 should be quite a bit (about 3042%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 230, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 138240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 230 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 133840 (3042%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
