GeForce GTX 580 vs GeForce RTX 3080

Intro

The GeForce GTX 580 comes with a core clock frequency of 772 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1002 MHz. It also uses a 384-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 512 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 48 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce RTX 3080, which features clock speeds of 1440 MHz on the GPU, and 1188 MHz on the 10240 MB of GDDR6X memory. It features 8704 SPUs as well as 272 Texture Address Units and 96 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce GTX 580 244 Watts
GeForce RTX 3080 320 Watts
Difference: 76 Watts (31%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce RTX 3080 should in theory be much superior to the GeForce GTX 580 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 778547 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 580 192384 MB/sec
Difference: 586163 (305%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 will be a lot (more or less 693%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 580. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 391680 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 580 49408 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 342272 (693%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 will be a lot (approximately 273%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce GTX 580, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 138240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 580 37056 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 101184 (273%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
