GeForce RTX 3080 vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3080 makes use of a 8 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1440 MHz. The GDDR6X memory runs at a speed of 1188 MHz on this particular model. It features 8704 SPUs along with 272 Texture Address Units and 96 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which comes with core clock speeds of 1605 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8096 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Radeon RX 5700 XT 225 Watts
GeForce RTX 3080 320 Watts
Difference: 95 Watts (42%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce RTX 3080 should theoretically be quite a bit better than the Radeon RX 5700 XT overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 778547 MB/sec
Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
Difference: 319795 (70%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 is much (more or less 53%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon RX 5700 XT. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 391680 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 134880 (53%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 is quite a bit (more or less 35%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon RX 5700 XT, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 138240 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 35520 (35%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
