GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 vs Radeon RX 5500 XT

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 has a clock speed of 540 MHz and a DDR2 memory frequency of 400 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 80 nm design. It features 32 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 5500 XT, which features GPU clock speed of 1717 MHz, and 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 1408 SPUs, 88 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Radeon RX 5500 XT 130 Watts
Difference: 83 Watts (177%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 5500 XT should perform a lot faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 229376 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 216576 (1692%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT should be a lot (approximately 1649%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 151096 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 142456 (1649%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5500 XT is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 54944 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 256MB DDR2 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 50624 (1172%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
