Radeon R9 M370X vs Radeon RX 5500 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 M370X has a clock speed of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5500 XT, which comes with a clock speed of 1717 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It is comprised of 1408 SPUs, 88 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 5500 XT is 219% faster than the Radeon R9 M370X in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 229376 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 157376 (219%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT will be a lot (about 372%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M370X. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 151096 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 119096 (372%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT is a lot (about 329%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M370X, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 54944 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 42144 (329%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
