GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) vs Radeon RX 5500

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) has a GPU clock speed of 650 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 970 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 128 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 5500, which has core speeds of 1670 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 1408 SPUs along with 88 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 135 Watts
Radeon RX 5500 150 Watts
Difference: 15 Watts (11%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 5500 should perform a lot faster than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 229376 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 62080 MB/sec
Difference: 167296 (269%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 should be much (approximately 253%) better at AF than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G92). (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 146960 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 41600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 105360 (253%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5500 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 53440 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 10400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 43040 (414%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
